Lion Air flight missing after taking off from Jakarta: Indonesian official

On Monday morning   a Lion Air Passenger plane went missing after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesian officials said.

They also added that a search and rescue operation is under way.

It was not immediately confirm how many people were on board the plane, believed to be a Boeing 737.

On Monday morning at 6.33am the plane lost the contact with the air traffic controllers, aviation authority officials said.

"It's true that Lion Air JT 610 has lost contact. We have forwarded the information to search and rescue teams," AirNav Indonesia spokesman Yohanes Harry Douglas said in a statement.

The flight was en route to Pangkal Pinang on Bangka island, east of Sumatra
